The LocoMOtive Lofts development, located at 49th and Harrison Streets in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, is an adaptive reuse of a formerly vacant and vandalized locomotive engine manufacturing plant. Together with a renovation to the existing building, a new addition created 34 market-rate apartments designed to LEED Gold standards with amenities such as balconies, secured parking in excess of 1/1 spaces, washer/dryers in each apartment, and designer kitchens and baths.
In an effort to maximize sustainability and energy efficiency for the whole building and the units respectively, Sota was involved as part of the project team from the earliest stages of design all the way through construction. The result of this team effort was a harmony of clean design and sustainable living that offers the healthiest environment along with a very low utility cost for residents. Green features include R-5 windows, a super-insulated thermal envelope, state-of-the-art HVAC equipment to minimize tenant utilities as well as provide excellent indoor air quality, and a fresh air system that provides variable air flow to each resident's preference.
